Here’s an interesting article about the oil industry that I think is worth contemplating giving our discussion in class. Of course, before anybody starts ranting about how “awful” it is that this occurs, keep in mind that the first step in understanding how things work is to reframe the way we see the world.

Oil defiantly fuels our world. Our economy. I have no problem what methods our country uses to get more resources because I cant stop them. I am not one of the individuals make decisions in the world. What is the most I can do? Protest? I need to focus on the goals I need to achieve in my life. Oil fuels our voting processes too because oil companies are paying for candidates campaigns. I just don’t know what I can do. Of course I can sit here and rant. I hate how the government treats its people like shit. How it doesn’t really care about nothing but money. Money fucking runs our world. We are measured by how much money fucking money we have. People with money think they are better than other. I am one of those people; because I have money I think u am better than people. But I don’t have that oil money though. I wish I did. I want to get that oil money. The point of the matter is, it doesn’t affect me. If my country goes into another country and take their old then so be it. Who says that land people live on is their land. This world formed without ownership and it should have remained that way. They should come up here and take our resources. I wouldn’t oppose it cause this land was free of ownership when it formed then why the hell should people think they can take onwerships. Buying land to build a house is dumb too. This land was giving by the heaven and we have commodfied it. Oil was a natural resource and it now people sell it to us. It was the world’s, no one owns the world. I should go to liba and get oil to because it’s the worlds not anyone specifically. We all should have a piece of the pie. Ok I am getting my oil. Today, Now. Right now. Whatever I erally don’t care about it. We are all fighting for resources. So let the best man win. If the us loses than so be it.
I do not even know where to begin when I think about how the oil companies seem to rule the world. It almost seems like a joke. They are truly an unstoppable force that controls Washington. They are equivalent to a big bully pushing around the all the congressman, making them do whatever they want. I have to admit that as a conservative American, I was pretty frustrated after reading this article. First of all, I never had a problem with oil companies. I figured they were making all this money and creating jobs for the public. Boy was I wrong! This article explains how the oil companies are 100% profit. This has to be a joke. I cannot believe that the money doesn’t revenue into the economy and make it increase. The fact that these oil companies are making so much money is ridiculous. To try and understand this, I think about putting myself in their shoes. Why would they want so much money? The only reason I can come up with is that oil will eventually run out and they’re trying to make as much money as possible why they can, or the fact that they are just plain old greedy.

(continued) Why would they want so much money? The only reason I can come up with is that oil will eventually run out and they’re trying to make as much money as possible why they can, or the fact that they are just plain old greedy. Congress has to find a way to eliminate this monster that controls them. They need to find a way to pass a law without the oil companies shutting it down. I believe the only way to do this is to try and take it one step at a time. Congress needs a simpler method that will work over a longer period of time then just a decade. If you purpose a law that is going to take 40 billions of dollars away from the oil companies of course it is not going to pass. They need to find something that the oil companies can maybe agree with and make it a much slower process. This cannot just happen overnight, it has to happen over the next 30 years.
This article states that the oil companies use their deep pockets to control capitol hill and prevent congress from passing bills that will affect their large profits. I realize that this article is against the oil lobbyists, but even so, I can’t see any real argument for why they need the subsidiaries. Oil is energy of the past and if we want to continue growing, we need to start looking towards other forms of energy. I think that this is just a symptom of the larger problem that is our campaign finance process. It’s unfortunate that companies have direct control over politicians by funding or refusing to fund their campaigns. I think it’s obvious that if there were no financial incentives these bills would have been passed a long time ago. Like the article said, were cutting funding to things like education and firefighters, but still oil companies are getting money that was only meant to help the industry when it was still small. The incentives are no longer necessary because the oilmen are making large profits at a time when many industries are seeing a decline in profits. How does a 4 billion dollar subsidiary have any effect on the amount of jobs being created in a multi-trillion dollar industry?
I think it’s safe to say that many of the smaller renewable energy industries could use this money to start creating new technology. No one can argue the fact that renewable energy, no matter how ineffective it is now, is the way of the future. It makes you wonder, with all the control that the oil industry has, can they block these renewable energy companies from making real headway. They are private companies, and therefore look out for themselves first. They have a lot of control over our politicians who are supposed to be doing what’s best for us. When the oil companies’ best interests and the nation’s best interests are in conflict, I think that most politicians will side with the oil companies. That’s pretty upsetting.
